Introduction Conclusions References Tables Figures Back Close Abstract Introduction Conclusions References Tables Figures Back Close Abstract The Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) retrieval technique consists of calculating the eigenvectors of the spectra to later perform a linear regression between these and the atmospheric states, this first step is known as training. At a later stage, known as performing the retrievals, atmospheric profiles are derived from measured atmospheric 5 radiances. When EOF retrievals are trained with a statistically different data set than the one used for retrievals two basic problems arise: significant biases appear in the retrievals and differences between the covariances of the training data set and the measured data set degrade them. 10 The retrieved profiles will show a bias with respect to the real profiles which comes from the combined effect of the mean difference between the training and the real spectra projected into the atmospheric state space and the mean difference between the training and the atmospheric profiles. The standard deviations of the difference between the retrieved profiles and the real 15 ones show different behavior depending on whether the covariance of the training spectra is bigger, equal or smaller than the covariance of the measured spectra with which the retrievals are performed. The procedure to correct for these effects is shown both analytically and with a measured example. It consists of first calculating the average and standard deviation of the 20 difference between real observed spectra and the calculated spectra obtained from the real atmospheric state and the radiative transfer model used to create the training spectra. In a later step, measured spectra must be bias corrected with this average before performing the retrievals and the linear regression of the training must be performed adding noise to the spectra corresponding to the aforementioned calculated standard 25 deviation. This procedure is optimal in the sense that to improve the retrievals one must resort to using a different training data set or a different algorithm.

An Improved DINEOF Algorithm for Filling Missing Values in Spatio-Temporal Sea Surface Temperature Data

In this study, an improved Data INterpolating Empirical Orthogonal Functions (DINEOF) algorithm for determination of missing values in a spatio-temporal dataset is presented. Compared with the ordinary DINEOF algorithm, the iterative reconstruction procedure until convergence based on every fixed EOF to determine the optimal EOF mode is not necessary and the convergence criterion is only reache...

Erythrocyte Osmotic Fragility and Haematologic Parameters of Three Breeds of 9-Week-Old Broiler Chickens

The difference in Erythrocyte Osmotic Fragility (EOF) and haematologic parameters among two pure (Marshal and Ross) and a Hubbard-Anak cross breeds of 9-week-old broiler chickens were evaluated in this study. There was a statistically significant (P<0.05) decrease in EOF in Marshall breed at NaCl concentrations of 0.5% when compared to other breeds. However, Ross breed had the highest EOF at th...

Global upper ocean heat content and climate variability

Observational data from the Global Temperature and Salinity Profile Program were used to calculate the upper ocean heat content (OHC) anomaly. The thickness of the upper layer is taken as 300 m for the Pacific/Atlantic Ocean and 150 m for the Indian Ocean since the Indian Ocean has shallower thermoclines. First, the optimal spectral decomposition scheme was used to build up monthly synoptic tem...

A global model of the ionospheric F2 peak height based on EOF analysis

The ionospheric F2 peak height hmF2 is an important parameter that is much needed in ionospheric research and practical applications. In this paper, an attempt is made to develop a global model of hmF2. The hmF2 data, used to construct the global model, are converted from the monthly median hourly values of the ionospheric propagation factor M(3000)F2 observed by ionosondes/digisondes distribut...
